Electrical Safety Test Standards Explained: IEC, UL, and GB

Electrical Safety Standards for Global Market Compliance
Electrical products sold in international markets must comply with electrical safety standards set by recognized certification bodies. EEC Huayi manufactures electrical safety testers used by manufacturers to demonstrate compliance with IEC, UL, GB, and related regional standards across Asia, the Americas, and EMEA.
What Are Electrical Safety Test Standards?
Electrical safety standards are technical documents that define the minimum test requirements a product must pass before it can be sold in a given market. They specify which tests must be performed, at what voltage, for how long, and with what pass/fail thresholds. Most standards require at least AC withstand voltage testing. Many also require insulation resistance and ground bond.
IEC Standards
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) publishes the standards most widely adopted in Europe, Asia, and EMEA. IEC 62368-1 now governs audio/video and IT equipment. IEC 60335 applies to household appliances. IEC 61010 covers measurement and laboratory instruments. Products bearing the CE mark must comply with applicable IEC standards.
UL Standards
Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standards apply to products sold in North America. UL 60950 has been largely superseded by UL 62368-1 for IT and audio/video products. UL 508 covers industrial control equipment. UL-listed products must pass agency-witnessed testing at specified voltage levels.
GB Standards
GB standards are China’s national mandatory standards and are required for products sold in the Chinese domestic market. GB standards are often harmonized with IEC standards but may specify different test voltages or durations. Manufacturers exporting to China must verify compliance with the applicable GB standard for their product category.
Which Standard Applies to Your Product?
The correct standard depends on product type, end market, and intended use. Your certification agency will specify the required tests and thresholds. A multi-function electrical safety tester that covers ACW, DCW, IR, and ground bond gives you the flexibility to meet requirements across multiple standards without purchasing additional instruments.
